What impact has OADI had on your academic or professional experience?
Though OADI's focus is to serve undergraduate students at Cornell, OADI has had a profound and invaluable impact on my academic and professional career. Serving in my role, as McNair graduate coordinator, has kept me grounded and at times enrolled in my PhD program. Graduate school as a first-generation, low-income and minority student is TOUGH; however, the students and staff in OADI always reminded me of my value as a person, scientist, mentor and friend. I am forever grateful to the staff and students of OADI.
What has it meant to be recognized for an award and as a recipient?
Being the recipient of the 2025 Toni Morrison outstanding graduate mentorship award is such an incredible honor! I am truly grateful to have been able to mentor and grow the next generation of researchers. The award confirmed that the students and OADI staff recognized my efforts and dedication to serving students. The award serves as encouragement to never forget the power of mentoring and being a role model.
What values guide you and inspire you?
My guiding principles can be summarized in this quote from Toni Morrison, "If you are free, you need to free somebody else. If you have some power, then your job is to empower somebody else." I gave, and will continue to give, back to students because I was in the same position as many of these students. I am a doctoral candidate at Cornell because my mentors freed and empowered me; thus, it is my job to do the same as I continue on my journey. I draw inspiration from the achievements of those who have come before me and the excitement and curiosity I see in those who come after me.
