Our Mission

The Office of Academic Diversity Initiatives (OADI) at Cornell University serves as a centralized hub that provides academic and professional-development support and resources for undergraduate students who are traditionally underrepresented and/or underserved in higher education. OADI’s mission is to empower students to develop and leverage their own academic agency as they seek to achieve their scholastic, professional, and personal goals.

We achieve this by:

  • Affirming student academic journeys as identity-informed and recognizing the whole student. Our students represent a wide-range of identities, experiences, and academic journeys.
  • Utilizing OADI’s unique position as a centralized hub to facilitate access to the broadest range of academic and professional enrichment opportunities at Cornell.
  • Mitigating traditional financial barriers to academic and professional enrichment opportunities via direct-student funding and cost-sharing collaborations with campus partners.
  • Providing an additional place on campus for students to create communities where they can be their authentic selves.

 Our Vision

To positively influence the academic journeys of Cornell’s diverse student population so they are best positioned to create not only a prosperous livelihood but also a meaningful life and legacy.

 Our Community

OADI’s welcoming community supports undergraduate students who are traditionally underrepresented and/or underserved. These populations include but are not limited to students who identify as students of color, low-income, first generation college students, veterans, non-traditional students and the intersections of these and other identities.

Our signature programs and direct services facilitate access to the broadest range of academic and professional enrichment opportunities at Cornell. OADI is also committed to a culture of inclusion in which students from diverse backgrounds experience a genuine sense of belonging, engagement and achievement. We value and celebrate the unique strengths and experiences that students bring to our space. We help them leverage these qualities as they seek to achieve their scholastic, professional and personal goals.

OADI Assessment Charge

To assess the extent to which we facilitate student access to academic and professional enrichment opportunities and cultivate student agency toward those pursuits, our intent being to positively impact student academic and career-efficacy.

We pronounce OADI as "wadi," which is an Arabic/Swahili word that refers to a cool protected passage route/valley through a desert, often formed by a seasonal river.
